What is in the name?
The company name 'SsangYong' means 'Double Dragons'. The name was first used in 1986, but the company has a long history dating back to 1954. The company was first known as the Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop in South Korea.
The company formed a strategic partnership with Daimler-Benz in the 1990s when they developed the SsangYong Musso. The Musso was first sold as a Mercedes-Benz and then later as a SsangYong.
The company was bought by Daewoo Motors in the late 90s and finally in 2010 was purchased by the Indian car manufacturer Mahindra Automotive.
Since the acquisition by Mahindra Automotive the company has gone from strength-to-strength. The company was boosted by the sales success of the Tivoli, the first new model under new ownership. SsangYong plans to introduce high-performance, mass-market electric vehicles into the South Korean market with the help of Mahindra.
